"It's a disorder, not a decision."

In recognition of World Mental Health Day – October 10th, I invite you to join me in working to end the stigma of mental health. In a world where struggles are often shrouded in silence, sharing personal stories is how we can help each other navigate the labyrinth of mental health challenges. When the world doesn’t listen, be the friend who does.
"The greatest cruelty is our casual blindness to the despair of others."
This is the true tale of a small, sarcastic squaw facing a whirlwind of emotions, navigating the treacherous waters of anxiety and depression. Overwhelmed and underperforming, she makes the difficult resolution to live free or else die.
Journeying to lands unknown she surrenders herself to hope, for a new beginning. Bravely challenging and steadily conquering the imps and monsters from the past, until she can reach the highly prized yet elusive haven of tranquility.
Having faced many treacherous demons and overcoming each, one by one, she recognizes the harsh truth that these battles will persist, the malignant forces will never be vanquished. They may be quieted, but they cannot be silenced forever.
Rather than lament the bitter truth, she defiantly chooses to hold fast to the new wisdom and share the knowledge she has painstakingly harvested so that others may face their hardships with courage and support. Until at last, one day, a legion of survivors unite to debunk the prejudices of mental care.
And so, begins her journey to live a more purposeful life. Imprudently shedding her armor, she disrobes on a crowded platform for all to see, naked and afraid. Desperately searching for a colony of like-minded divested combatants, while wearing nothing but a smile.
Some passersby gawk and laugh. Others just stop and stare. Many question her sanity. But mostly, people just continue on with their lives.
Yet, around the perimeters edge, a handful of onlookers open their third eye and begin to take it all in, while a few others slough off their hard casings and bare themselves to reveal their own scars.
She resolutely carry’s on, still vulnerable and in the raw, but slowly fashioning a new, more suitable garb. A habit of transparency, with a shield of honesty and a sabered quill.
She reveals her traumas and injuries, her damages and defects, one by one. And gradually, she begins to gain in strength and grow in faith. Faith in herself, in her journey, in her ability to overcome, and in her future.
No longer burdened by the tormenting echos of the past. Released from the dungeons of the mirthless blues. She faces each day with spirit and serenity. Knowing the dangers that lurk around each bend, that she sees now as necessary to further her growth.
Recovery is an arduous journey with no scroll to chart the way. One moment, you're high on self-care rituals, feeling as zen as a chilled cucumber. Next thing you know, you're binge-watching GOT at 2 AM, questioning your life choices.
But amidst the chaos, there is a silver lining. Each stumble is a chance to rise stronger, each setback a setup for a glorious comeback. The path to recovery is ringed with treachery, but trust me, the ruse makes for the most memorable tales of our storied lives.
To anyone out there battling their own demons, I have one message – hodor! You are not alone in this epic quest for mental wellness. Mental health recovery isn't a one-size-fits-all narrative; it's a dull "bowl of brown” that beckons a sprinkle of hope, a dash of courage, and a pinch of humor.
Remember, it's okay to not be okay. The road to recovery isn't a straight sprint; it's a meandering marathon with pit stops for self-reflection and Netflix binges.
So, the next time life throws you a curveball, catch it with style, wink at the universe, and say, "Not today!" Be the hero of your story and the protagonist of your recovery saga. And don't forget to laugh along the way. Afterall, “laughter is poison to fear.”
Your journey is not a sign of weakness but a testament to your strength. Your story is unique, your quest is valid, and your resilience is awe-inspiring. Don’t be ashamed of your story. It will inspire others.
Now go forth, embrace your quirks, and let your recovery story be the guiding light for others in the long dark night. Together, we can shatter the stigma, one tale at a time.
