Self-care

Updated: Apr 1

There is a voice that doesn't use words. Listen. - Rumi

The struggle for self-care can feel overwhelming, especially for working moms like me. But self-care isn't just a luxury; it's a necessity. As parents, we often put our needs last, thinking it’s what’s best for our families. But remember, taking care of yourself means you can take better care of the people who depend on you. Scheduling time for just you, even if it's brief, can lead to more joy. It can be as simple as calling your best friend or listening to your favorite playlist. Those little moments fill your cup and help you stay patient and loving.

Being a parent often means juggling numerous tasks each day. Between work, home, and kids, it’s easy to forget about ourselves. Many parents feel guilty about wanting time for self-care. But it’s so important! Taking a moment to relax or do something you love can recharge your spirit. A short walk, reading a favorite book, or even enjoying a warm cup of tea can make a world of difference. Remember, happy parents create a happier home!

However, finding those precious minutes is a real challenge. Every day feels like a race against the clock. You want to give your best to your children, but neglecting yourself can lead to burnout. It’s okay to carve out some time for yourself! Maybe it’s a few minutes of quiet or a dedicated time for hobbies. Small actions can help keep you energized and present.

Taking care of yourself physically is more than just eating right and exercising. It’s about listening to your body and understanding what it needs. Maybe you need a girls nights out to release tension or a good night's sleep to recharge. When you prioritize yourself, you gradually begin to break the habit of putting yourself last.

It's a mindfulness technique similar to opposite action where when facing a stressful situation, instead of going into hyperdrive mode, you take a minute to calm your mind, slow your breathing and center your thoughts in order to nurture your body. This can help you feel stronger and more capable. Remember, it’s okay to take a break and treat yourself with kindness. Your body deserves it, just like your mind and heart do.

Mental self-care is all about giving your mind the attention it craves. It can be as simple as taking time to breathe deeply or exploring a new hobby that excites you. Sometimes, just stepping away from daily stressors can clear your head. Reading a book or meditating can help you find calmness amidst chaos. Your thoughts matter, and caring for your mental health boosts your resilience against life’s challenges. You're not alone in feeling overwhelmed; give yourself the space to think and feel.

Emotional self-care revolves around recognizing your feelings and nurturing them. It’s okay to feel sad, happy, or angry; these emotions are part of being human. Talking to a friend or journaling can bring relief and clarity. By expressing yourself, you validate your feelings and allow space for healing. Remember, it’s healthy to seek help or support when needed. You are not weak for needing others; it shows strength and a desire to feel better. Embrace your emotions; they make you who you are.

Even on the craziest days, reminding yourself to prioritize self-care can transform your perspective. It’s okay to ask for help, whether it’s from a partner, family member, or friend. Sharing responsibilities can free up those much-needed moments for yourself. You might feel guilty taking this time at first, but it’s actually a gift to your children. A refreshed parent is more fun and engaged, creating better memories and experiences together.

Ultimately, every parent deserves moments of self-care. It’s not selfish; it’s a way to nurture your own well-being. Finding that elusive balance might mean rethinking your daily schedule or enlisting support. Celebrate small victories when you manage to squeeze in self-care - it’s progress! When you can take a breath or enjoy a favorite activity, you model a healthy attitude toward self-love for your kids. Show them that it’s perfectly okay to take a break and recharge!

Self-care is giving the world the best of you instead of what’s left of you.

- Katie Reed

Finding balance in physical, mental, and emotional self-care is crucial for overall well-being. It’s not always easy, and that’s okay. Some days may feel heavy, and you might struggle to prioritize yourself. During those times, be gentle with yourself. Acknowledge your efforts, no matter how small. Slowly integrating simple self-care practices into your routine can build a strong foundation for a happier, healthier life. Remember, self-care is not selfish; it’s necessary, and you deserve to feel whole and at peace.

Lastly, remind yourself that self-care is a journey and doesn’t have to look a certain way. What works for someone else might not resonate with you, and that's perfectly fine. Experiment with different practices that speak to you, whether it's a warm bath, painting, or just spending time in nature. The key is to listen to yourself and honor what you need. Celebrate every step you take towards caring for your whole self. Each effort counts on this journey of self-discovery.
